Beautiful work by our amazing pupils

I wanted to take this opportunity to to congratulate every single pupil at XP and XPE who has completed any of the home learning tasks over the last two weeks.

I commend your dedication to your education in this very strange time!

It has been an absolute pleasure to see your artwork and has really brought a smile to our faces. So thankyou for that.

I wanted to share some of the work that has been sent to us over the last two weeks – so it could make you smile too!

Carry on being creative, be safe and keep in touch (we love to see your work)

Thanks again from the expeditionary arts team (Miss Jones, Mr Jackson, Mrs Cross and Mr Robins).

Crew EJN were treat to breakfast during crew time today. They worked great as a team to prepare toast and hot drinks and also cleaned up the room really well.

It was a really good way to end this term and have a bit of a chill and chat while we were discussing ‘kindness’. A student from crew had created a presentation all based round the importance of kindness to others and how unkind behaviour and actions can really affect someone and hurt their feelings.

It was a lovely atmosphere and pupils got their fill of biscuits, toast, brioche rolls, hot chocolate, tea and coffee!!

Crew EJN working on their teamwork

Crew EJN discussed what they thought good teamwork looked like then put this into action whilst playing benchball to burn off some of their energy!

We played against crew HMI over at XPE and are going to organise a re-match where we will meet again and test our teamwork within crew!

Our crew circled up half way through the game to discuss how they could change their tactics to win. They took it in turns to voice their ideas. Harrison was a natural leader who took the lead.

It was brilliant for our crew to spend some time outside the classroom and having fun whilst learning about eachother and developing our skills. Well done crew!

X26 Admiral were in the lab yesterday focussing on separating mixtures. This is part of our investigations for two case studies looking at how soldiers in the trenches could clean dirty water and how they could avoid harm during a mustard gas attack.

In this session we separated sand and salt by first mixing with water. Since sand is soluble, we could then filter to separate the sand. Following this we used an evaporating basin to separate out the salt.

Every member of the class achieved some great results and managed to separate the sand from the salt.

Here are Mollie and Becky with their finished experiment and Hubert’s prediction of what would happen:

X26 Expert on WW1 artefacts

Last week X26 students had Mr Witton in to show them a number of World War one artifacts.  This linked with our expedition ‘Does War Unite or divide?’

Students used the protocol I notice, I wonder and I question about the artifacts.

X26 Admiral – STEAM Extended Study – Revision

X26 (Year 7) Admiral have an assessment in STEAM on Thursday of this week.

X26 Admiral Students need to revise for the following two learning targets:

LT6: I can explain how the states of matter are a function of the spacing and movement of the particles that make up a substance.

LT7: I can demonstrate how the motion and spacing of particles in a substance change as the substance changes state of matter.

On the Over the Top expedition website, there are lots of resources to help students with their revision. Some students have also taken their STEAM exercise books home to revise.

The expedition website can be accessed from the school homepage at any point by clicking n the menu on Students,  Year 7, 7 Expeditions.

Under “STEAM Case Study 1” there are revision guides, quizzes and example assessment questions.

How should my son or daughter revise?

The most important things to remember about revision are that watching videos or reading information are not revision. You can help at home by quizzing your son or daughter and testing what they know.

The most effective way to revise is to do retrieval practice and the apply this knowledge to questions. This video explains how that works.

Students have set their own priorities for revision based on areas for development from mini-quizzes this week.

X26 Skipper – STEAM Extended Study – Revision

X26 (Year 7) Skipper have an assessment in STEAM on Tuesday of next week.

(Due to the staff days Admiral will have their assessment later in the week, I will put an additional post on when Admiral students are prepped for their revision.)

Last week I posted the excellent field work and data collection of the local ecosystem, that X25 completed. This week, students used the data collected to built food chains and then grappled incredibly hard to build an XP ecosystem food web.

Learning Target: I can combine food chains to form a food web.

Next week, we will be investigating what might happen if disease killed one of the species in XP ecosystem or a completely new species was introduced…
