Crew EJN working on their teamwork

Crew EJN discussed what they thought good teamwork looked like then put this into action whilst playing benchball to burn off some of their energy!

We played against crew HMI over at XPE and are going to organise a re-match where we will meet again and test our teamwork within crew!

Our crew circled up half way through the game to discuss how they could change their tactics to win. They took it in turns to voice their ideas. Harrison was a natural leader who took the lead.

It was brilliant for our crew to spend some time outside the classroom and having fun whilst learning about eachother and developing our skills. Well done crew!

X26 XBlock Drama

This week in XBlock Drama Year 7 have been working on their use of characterisation skills. The task in today’s lesson was to create still images of traditional children stories such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  The students worked hard to create images that were interesting and realistic. I was really impressed with the craftsmanship and quality of their work!

Excellent work X26!

X26 Skipper – STEAM Extended Study – Revision

X26 (Year 7) Skipper have an assessment in STEAM on Tuesday of next week.

(Due to the staff days Admiral will have their assessment later in the week, I will put an additional post on when Admiral students are prepped for their revision.)

X26 Skipper Students need to revise for the following two learning targets:

LT6: I can explain how the states of matter are a function of the spacing and movement of the particles that make up a substance.

LT7: I can demonstrate how the motion and spacing of particles in a substance change as the substance changes state of matter.

On the Over the Top expedition website, there are lots of resources to help students with their revision. Some students have also taken their STEAM exercise books home to revise.

The expedition website can be accessed from the school homepage at any point by clicking n the menu on Students,  Year 7, 7 Expeditions.

Under “STEAM Case Study 1” there are revision guides, quizzes and example assessment questions.

How should my son or daughter revise?

The most important things to remember about revision are that watching videos or reading information are not revision. You can help at home by quizzing your son or daughter and testing what they know.

The most effective way to revise is to do retrieval practice and the apply this knowledge to questions. This video explains how that works.

Students have set their own priorities for revision based on areas for development from mini-quizzes this week.

Crew EJN and SHA join forces to watch and discuss Newsround this week

Crew EJN and SHA joined forces on Thursday to watch the stories on this weeks episode of Newsround.

We discussed the following:

  • New rules that Instagram have put in place about advertising dieting products. The pupils agreed with this rule and discussed positive body image and how social media can affect the way you feel about yourself.
  • We spoke about Mrs Hannam’s favourite topic (not) … Brexit and our Prime Minister Boris Johnson. He has been asked to come up with a new Brexit solution before the end of September.
  • Burger Kings decision to stop giving plastic toys out with their kids meals. The pupils agreed that this was a good idea and would help to reduce the use of plastic and help the environment.
  • A swimmer called Sarah Thomas who swam for 54 hours (non stop!) for a total of 130 miles! Students said that she was extremely brave and showed lots of courage.

It was lovely to spend time together as crews and will look into joining forces again to discuss what is happening in the world.

Well done crew EJN and SHA!

The week’s schedule is as follows:

Wednesday – Out of school on crew activities so students will need a backpack with a packed lunch, a bottle of water, hiking boots and waterproofs. Please can students come to school in trainers not their walking boots.  We are expected to be back at school for around 5pm.

Thursday- Out of school on crew activities so students will need a backpack with a packed lunch, a bottle of water, hiking boots and waterproofs. Please can students come to school in trainers with their walking boots in their bag. We are expected to be back at school for around 5pm.

X25 Xblock

In X25 we are looking at facades of buildings and artists who are influenced by them. They have used a range of media to re-create one of the artist compositions.

Today we have gone outside to draw from observation and look at one point perspective, making our observational drawings look realistic. Here they are working hard!

Extended study has been set for X25 to take photographs of their own house (focussing on the facade). They can also take photographs of interesting facades in Doncaster or of a friends/family house. They need to have their photographs ready for x-block session next week.

X25 Fieldwork 20th and 21st March

X25 Admiral will be carrying out fieldwork on Wednesday 20th March.

X25 Skipper will be carrying out fieldwork on Thursday 21st March.

On each day students should arrive at school at the usual time.

The fieldwork is located at a range of former quarries where students can study the bedrock and superficial deposits in detail, as well as taking measurements of the dimensions of each site. Students are expected be back in school for the regular time of 3.15pm

Student will need to be prepared for the weather. Long trousers and sleeves are best as we will be walking through some overgrown areas. Wellies and a raincoat are advisable whatever the weather.

Students will need a pack up lunch, they can take this in their normal school bags. We can provide lunch for students on free school meals.

Student will also need a bottle of water and suncream.

X25 Celebration of Learning – REMINDER

A reminder that the X25 (Year 7) celebration of learning is this Wednesday evening, 19th December from 5.30pm until around 7.00pm.

It is important that every student has someone from their family at this event as it helps to provide an authentic audience for their work in what will be a great celebration of their efforts in their very first learning expeditions at XP.

Students are asked to dress smartly as this is a formal occasion. Students can bring a change of clothes or can choose to attend in smart clothes for the whole day.

Student must stay in school between 3.15pm and the start of the celebration of learning. They will be given some time to relax after school and before the last rehearsals, so they can bring a pack up tea if they choose.

We look forward to seeing you this week!

Many thanks

Students need to inform Mr Walker as to whether or not they are available to play.

Both teams will train the day before, on Tuesday 6th November, to prepare for the game. It is important that students can attend both.

With there being no fixtures now until after half term there will be no Rugby or Football training on Monday 15th Oct and Thursday 18th Oct respectively.

Rugby training will resume on the first Tuesday back after half term before a game versus Hall Cross on Wednesday 8th Nov for year 7 and 8 – more details to follow.

Football training will be shelved for boys until after Christmas as the league fixtures are now delayed until it is light enough again to play them after school. Basketball club will begin on Mondays after school in its place.

I will post full after school club info for next half term later this week.
