X22 Art Deadline

X22 have an Art deadline for the combined Art and History expedition ‘Who were the Vikings?’

The deadline is on Friday 21st December: study sheets and final product needs to be handed in on this day.

You should have the following:
– 8 images that will help them with the guiding question ‘who were the vikings’, stuck in to your sketch book and annotated.
– 1 tonal study, annotated
-1 coloured pencil study, annotated
-1 charcoal study, annotated
-1 paint study, annotated
-2 x linear ideas
-Final Product
-Narrative for product

I am available on a Wednesday for extended study if students would like to work in PO8, also they can do it on other days but I am around to help on a Wednesday. Art folders can also be taken home to complete work, this should allow them to meet the deadline.

X22 beautiful work in history

Our fantastic Year 10 students have begun looking at the Vikings as part of the history GCSE period study. The guiding question for this expedition is ‘Who were the Vikings?’, and it has been lovely to see such beautiful work being produced by students already!

X22 ART ‘Who were the Vikings?’

X22 Skipper and Admiral are looking at images of Viking artefacts and questioning ‘who were the vikings?’ They are sketching from these images and overlaying coloured crayon to make their drawings look realistic.

X22 Admiral and Skipper fieldwork to Jorvik Viking Centre, York

On Wednesday 12th September C22 Admiral students will be visiting the Jorvik Viking Centre, York. The following day, Thursday 13th September, C22 Skipper students will attend the same visit.

The visit will take place wholly in school hours and students will return before the end of the day.

Students will need to ensure they are wearing warm clothing – as there is a short walk across York to the museum – as well as a packed lunch. Students who are on Free School Meals will have a lunch provided by school.

The visit will give students the opportunity to see Viking artefacts up close and in person as well as speaking to experts on this period of history.

C21 Preparation for Y11

Students have a small amount of revision to do over the summer for science. The work covers some of the fundamental knowledge which needs to be retained. This will allow students to make a running start to the year and will help us maximise the time available before their exams next year. Many students are confident with the ideas already so this will require very little work.

Secondly, there are some students who have not completed their ‘answer to the guiding question’ in science. It is important that students complete this before we return. It will be a challenging year for students next year as it is, so it would be beneficial for students not to have to catch up work on previous expeditions.

Finally, I do appreciate there will be weeks where Tassomai can not be done and that the most important thing for students is that they have a rest this holiday, however if Tassomai can be kept ticking over it would be useful to students. 

I would be really grateful your support with this.

To both students and families, please have a wonderful summer and enjoy the deserved rest.

C21 Silver Cycling Kit List

Here is the kit list for the Silver DofE Cycling expedition. Please check it fully. It is very similar the kit for bronze but there are some notable changes due to the mode of transport:

  • Students will need only a small day-sized backpack as they will be carrying most of their gear in pannier bags.
  • Hiking boots are not necessary.
  • There are some items that the whole group needs that need to be organised by individuals in the group. This is detailed in the full kit list.

C21 Fieldwork – Viking Festival, York

Last term students in both Admiral and Skipper in C21 worked on producing a booklet exploring the guiding question, ‘How Far Did the Vikings Forge a Legacy?’ After visiting the Jorvik Museum and a Viking exhibition at the Yorkshire Museum, students were given a Viking artefact to study. The focus of this study included the historical context as well as the scientific properties of their artefact, covering both GCSE History and Science standards. Students then assessed the work of their peers and decided which work should be included in the final product.

The booklet has now gone to print and the culminating fieldwork will be students attending the Viking Festival in York engaging with members of the public to explain their knowledge of the Viking period and their understanding of the science of metals and their properties. We will be hoping to raise funds for future expeditions by asking for donations in return for a copy of the booklet.

Skipper will be joining the festival on Wednesday 14 February and Admiral on the following day Thursday 15 February. Students will need to wrap up warm as we will be outside for large parts of the day and bring a packed lunch. We will leave during crew on both days and we will return for approximately 3.15pm on both days. If any parents wish to come to the event we will be based in the main festival tent in Parliament Square (opposite Marks and Spencer’s) as well as Coppergate and at the bottom of the Shambles near to the DIG Museum.
