X24 History, getting started with revision!

Students this week have been given their own copy of the revision guide for our History exam board OCR B SHP History. All students should have named their copy so that if they are misplaced they can be returned. Students are encouraged to annotate and highlight the guide as they carry out their revision.

The revision guide has a number of different topics, however, students will need to focus on the following sections for revision:

  • The Elizabethans
  • The People’s Heath
  • Living under Nazi Rule

The locations of these topics can be found in the contents page. We would recommend in general students start by revising The People’s Health as well as focusing on page 88 in order to prepare for the upcoming assessment in lessons.

If any student has been absent when these revision guides were handed out, they can see myself or Mrs Hannam directly and we will make sure they get their copy.

A further revision guide focusing on the Viking Expansion will be issued to students in the coming weeks.

X23’s tonal self portraits looking amazing!

Y10 have been working extremely hard to get their tonal self portraits finished for their ‘Christmas Style Lecture’ that is due to take place next week.

Pupils have looked at portraits through history in order to help them with their own self portraits.

Pupils have been asked to plan a background for their portraits to show aspects of their character and what makes them who they are. They have all been asked to create a rough plan in their sketchbook. Here are some examples:

Pupils now need to complete their background and mount their tonal self portraits onto them.

Here is one in progress:

Im looking forward to seeing this piece of work completed and displayed next week! Well done X23! Keep up the fantastic work!

Crew Nightingale reflect on their HOWLs

At the end of last term in Crew we spent some time reflecting and unpicking what our HOWLs should look like. Following our return from the two week break each Crew member has set new pledges to ensure they are Getting Smart, Being Kind and Working Hard. We will use these new pledges to frame and focus our final term in Year 10

X22 Application and Practice

As we are now coming to the end of our expedition ‘Are we really free to choose?‘ students have once again being applying their knowledge and practising answering exam questions. It’s been really pleasing to see so many students Working Hard and Getting Smart when attempting source and interpretation questions. Students have really risen to the challenge with these tricky questions! Here are just a few examples of their hard work from this week.

Today X22 students had an excellent opportunity to attend Sheffield Hallam University. The day involved an introduction to university and a chance to experience what studying for three years would be like. Students found out about the pathways into university and had the chance to see the numerous different courses on offer. Becky and Renee, from HEPP, were really helpful and used their own knowledge and experience to help build students’ understanding. Thank you HEPP!

Dear Parents

We have managed to secure a fantastic opportunity for our Year 10 students to visit the National Holocaust Museum as part of our expedition ‘Are we really free to choose?’ Students have been studying Hitler’s rise to power in Germany and the impact of Nazi rule so this will be an ideal opportunity for students to build their knowledge and ask questions about a key and tragic event in this historical period.

X22 Skipper students will attend on Wednesday 10th April 2019 and Admiral the following day Thursday 11th April 2019.

Students can come in casual dress and they will need to bring a packed lunch. Students who receive Free School Meals will be provided with a packed lunch.

We will leave school at 9.15am and we will return for the end of school at 3.15pm, traffic permitting. If there are any unforeseen delays we will update details via the school website.

A link to the museum’s website is here: https://www.nationalholocaustcentre.net/

Thanks for your support.

X22 Humanities Extended Study Due Thursday

Students have made an excellent start to our new expedition looking at the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany. This week we have examined the problems facing Germany after WW1, specifically the Treaty of Versailles, hyperinflation and the Great Depression. See below for their beautiful books and notes!

Students have been given an image of a propaganda poster from 1932 to annotate with their thoughts on the posters’ message and purpose. This is due next Thursday (7th February) where we will discuss students findings and prepare for an assessment.

The Celebration of Learning for X22 students will be on the 6th and 7th February. Students will be presenting their art work and discussing how they have chosen to represent last term’s guiding question: Who were the Vikings? The evening will begin at 5.30pm with a short introduction by our students followed by an opportunity for parents to view all students’ artwork and speak to students about the process and thinking behind their work.

Skipper students will present their work on Wednesday 6th February and Admiral students on Thursday 7th February.

We look forward to seeing you.
