Fight the Power immersion C29

Students in year 8 started this term off with immersion activities for their new expedition “Fight the Power”. In Art they grappled with stencils, starting to learn the skills needed to study the street art movement this term. In Science they started to look at Atoms, Elements and Compounds and took part in some Physics challenge activities. In Humanities sessions students grappled with some Shakespeare, looking at Elizabethan insults, witches and powerful natural forces which led into their first look at Macbeth! All these activities are leading students on their journey towards the guiding question “What is power?”

XP Students visit New College for Spanish Taster Day

Two of our Year 10 students and one Year 8 student visited New College today to experience A Level Spanish. Students worked with current Year 12 and Year 13 students to improve their speaking skills. They talked about what their lives would be like if they lived in Spain, building on previously learnt vocabulary and grammar, and adding new language through conversation. They also looked at careers where languages can be an advantage.

X29 Presentation of Learning

The X29 Year 7 Spanish presentation of learning will take place on Tuesday 18th July starting at 4:00 pm and finishing at 5:00 pm. The students will presenting work from their Spanish expedition “¿Te alegras de ser tú?” (Are you happy being you?). During this expedition the students have learned how to talk about themselves, their local area, their families and friends, and their life at school. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear X29 show off their impressive Spanish skills!

Students will be expected to stay on site until the presentation starts, and parents and carers should enter and sign in via the student entrance. The presentation will be held in the heart of XP school.

Crew Nightingale – Working Hard in their new expedition.

Students in the crew have settled into their new expedition “Hold back the River”.

In English students have been getting smart learning about Normans and how William became King. In Science students have started to learn, ‘How does water shape our world’? This is achieved by getting smart and answering the Learning Targets of ‘I can identify the parts of plant and animal cells. ‘I can name some specialised cells and explain how their structure links to their function’.

C29 and C28 National Storytelling Week

As this week is National Storytelling Week I thought it would be a great opportunity to read to some of our C29 and C28 students as part of Tranquil Tuesdays. Crew Leaders sent two students from each crew to join our reading circle.

It was wonderful to read Roald Dahl’s ‘The Landlady’ to them and hear their thoughts and theories at the end.

Stay tuned for more reading opportunities in the next few weeks.

Year 7 Spanish Autoretratos

Year 7 are learning to talk about themselves and their family this term, so they spent this session creating autoretratos – self portraits. Then they wrote a short description of themselves in Spanish saying what they’re like. ¡Buen trabajo!

Beautiful work in Art from C29

Our year 7 students have been getting to grips with mono printing this week – many of them trying it out for the first time! They’ve been using the skills which they have built up over the past term’s work on tone. Their images are all of artefacts relating to our expedition “From the ground up” which looks at the impact that coal mining has had on our city. We’re really proud of the beautiful work that our students are creating and hope that you’re looking forward to seeing it at their presentation of learning near the end of the term.

Crew Nightingale X29

First term completed in Year 7.

Aberdyfi – Climbing the mountain as a crew

It has been a wonderful first term for our crew and this week we now have the chosen name of ‘Nightingale’, presented outstandingly by Karina and Ruby. All of the crew have settled and are working hard and getting smart with learning in their new expeditions. The expeditions have also involved them going on fieldwork to: The National Coal mining museum in Wakefield, Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire and the evening at XP School with Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band visiting. The majority of the crew are set up and working and learning from their iPads or laptops and completing extended study on Google classroom and have individual accounts with Accelerated reader where they gain access every school day with reading in the morning, afternoon and in Crew for Tranquil Tuesdays.
