Crew SMI – Assessing Our HoWLs

Author Profile
12 May 2024

Claira Salter

This week, Crew SMI have spent a considerable amount of time looking at our HoWLs (Habits of Work and Learning), assessing how each student is currently performing. We began looking through the rubrics created by Miss Mitchell. Each HoWL had its own breakdown, from Beginning to Excellence, stating what behaviours should look like.

Students assessed themselves, making note of their score for each HoWL and calculating their overall Average HoWL score. Students then set themselves targets to work towards for the next few weeks based on their HoWL scores.

We then split into our classes, Admiral and Skipper, to complete the next part of our assessment. In our class groups we repeated the process, taking it in turns to peer assess each other. We then set an achievable yet challenging target for each student.

Each student took some time to read through the assessment results and planned their next steps in terms of their targets. I look forward to seeing how many students achieve their goals in the weeks to come!

The next Tuck Shop will be held on Thursday 16th May during first break nearer to XP, as the Year 11 students have their GCSE exams in XP East.

We are in need of sweet donations for our £1 lucky dip bags. We are looking for Haribos, fizzies, chews, lollies etc. Any home baked goods would be welcome too. We are hoping to do some different savoury ‘grab n go’ wraps this time as well as ice-creams / lollies.

As always, volunteers are needed to join our small but dedicated group. If anyone could offer some time on Wednesday or Thursday this week, drop Victoria a message via her email trickyvicky10@aol.com.

So far, we have raised over £750 in just three events, a fantastic sum for our kids. Let’s see what we can achieve together by the end of this academic year!

Beautiful Work This Week

XPGPHC – How can we continue to make progress in public health?

Year 9 students at XPG have embarked on their “You Give Me Fever” Expedition, which has culminated in their inaugural Public Health conference, addressing the challenges of public health amidst the cost-of-living crisis. Through three case studies examining historical and current health influences, they explored the impact of living conditions, government structures, and scientific advancements on people’s well-being.

This comprehensive analysis has also resulted in a formal report that presented key health risks for Gateshead’s residents, particularly in the context of the cost-of-living crisis. The report will be shared with the Health and Social Care Committee in Parliament.

Art takes flight at XPG!

Freya, a Year 7 student at XP Gateshead has created a beautiful piece of work that has been awarded a place in one of the most prestigious art galleries in the world. The Royal Academy is famous for showcasing new and established artists, bringing their work to a whole new audience.

The Young Artists Summer show, which is open for submissions to students studying in the UK aged from 4 – 19, opens in London on the 16th July and runs until the 11th August.

Freya’s painting Mr Pigeon was part of the expedition ‘Do your bit’ and honours the sacrifice that carrier pigeons made during WW1 and has been chosen from 21,500 other submissions. A remarkable achievement for a clearly talented and inspiring young artist.

We’ll follow up this story when Freya’s artwork is in place at the Royal Academy!

Is Science enough to save lives?

As part of their Expedition ‘You Give Me Fever’, C28 celebrated their learning this week – complete with a gallery of their incredible artwork. They shared scientific writing about diseases and their impact on society, dating back to the middle ages.

They sold their prints to raise money for their DofE Expedition – and the content will also be made into a book later in the year!

X27’s Visit to The National Holocaust Museum

Author Profile
8 May 2024

Claira Salter

After a rocky start to the day, X27 made it to the National Holocaust Museum in Newark where they’ve shown exceptional HoWLs during the day’s visit.

We were able to add rocks to the Children’s memorial, dedicated to the 1.5 million young people who were murdered during the Holocaust. A poignant moment, but an incredibly important one!

We also participated in a number of workshops throughout the day; learning about Jewish life before the Holocaust, what ghettos were like for Jewish people, and we even heard testimony from a Holocaust survivor, Janine; who was the only surviving member of her family. X27 have been a credit to XP today, asking some incredibly sensitive questions and giving fantastic answers to Zoe, our Educator; asking and answering questions about “What it means to be Jewish”, “Why is it important for survivors to pass on their stories?” and “Did you experience Antisemitism before the Holocaust?” – X27 also wanted to know more about resistance in the Ghettos and “What was your lowest point in the Holocaust” – where we learned about Janine’s account of losing her family.

Overall, it’s been a humbling day; but also a day where X27 showed tonnes of respect and compassion. They showed great maturity today and were super thoughtful.

Zoe left us with an incredible statement. She said to us: “If you were to stand and hold a minutes’ silence to show your respect for each person who lost their lives in the Holocaust, you’d be stood silently in the exact same spot for over 11 years.”
