C28 Crew JEL Micro-adventure

Crew JEL have had an excellent start to life at XP. They have all settled in very well. In the first week students participated in a Micro-adventure. This involved them looking at the environment and the Eco-systems around XP. They looked at the plant and wildlife types and how they might design a garden to attract insects and birdlife to it.

We then had an expert (Dennis), come to visit Crew to speak about garden birds and to help students to build their birdboxes. The students started with a pack of pre-sawn wood and screwed it together to form the birdboxes, which were then painted, and which will be taken home and placed in the garden. Hopefully over the coming years we will be getting updates as to what birds have used it.

Check out the finished Bird Boxes. Fantastic work Crew JEL!

Parent Information – JEL has Crew Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and NEA has crew Monday and Wednesday.

Crew Berger: Things we’ve learned in lockdown 2.0

So, a new year arrived filled with hope and possibility – and then we got the news that we were learning from home again.  Crew were determined to write to Gavin Williamson this term to ask the government to make a decision about GCSEs, and then it was announced that they wouldn’t go ahead as planned.  It’s felt a bit like we’re walking on shifting sands as we make our way towards the end point of our XP journey, but it’s been really inspiring to see how crew Berger have got stuck in, and are working hard to make the best of the situation.

As well as learning loads of things in our online sessions, and getting to grips with working from home again – we’ve found out some interesting things about crew in our morning hangouts…

One member of crew can’t live without their hot water tap – so they can survive on hot drinks and ramen…

Someone needs help waking up in the morning, but luckily they have a personal alarm call each morning from a very kind crew member…

Two of us have broken our video game controllers – probably due to excessive overuse after being stuck inside all day…

Lots of us feel like we’ve exhausted the possibilities that Netflix has to offer…

Four of us are still catching Pokemon…

And one of us really likes their towel!

I wonder what next week will bring.

Crew EJN and SHA join forces to watch and discuss Newsround this week

Crew EJN and SHA joined forces on Thursday to watch the stories on this weeks episode of Newsround.

We discussed the following:

  • New rules that Instagram have put in place about advertising dieting products. The pupils agreed with this rule and discussed positive body image and how social media can affect the way you feel about yourself.
  • We spoke about Mrs Hannam’s favourite topic (not) … Brexit and our Prime Minister Boris Johnson. He has been asked to come up with a new Brexit solution before the end of September.
  • Burger Kings decision to stop giving plastic toys out with their kids meals. The pupils agreed that this was a good idea and would help to reduce the use of plastic and help the environment.
  • A swimmer called Sarah Thomas who swam for 54 hours (non stop!) for a total of 130 miles! Students said that she was extremely brave and showed lots of courage.

It was lovely to spend time together as crews and will look into joining forces again to discuss what is happening in the world.

Well done crew EJN and SHA!

Crew Berger: Duke of Edinburgh practice

Crew Berger did a great job on their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition.  We braved the wilds of Askern, met a horse with a moustache (you have to look really closely to see it…) and survived the freezing temperatures in order to complete our practice walk and camp.

We’re looking forward to our qualifying expedition in June and would like to appreciate Mr Pearson for working with us and for taking our photo as well!
