What Does It Mean to Be Human?

Amie Hudson

This week, every Year 8 student worked alongside expert artist Michelle Clarke-Stables as part of their Being Human expedition.

Michelle introduced students to the art of willow weaving, inspiring them to create hearts, spheres, circles and nests in response to the guiding question: What does it mean to be human?

With imagination, patience and teamwork, students brought their individual creations together, carefully entwining them to form one magnificent heart sculpture. Each piece is unique, yet together they create something greater, a powerful symbol of connection, collaboration and belonging.

The finished sculpture celebrates the creativity of every student and demonstrates the strength of our community when we work together. It is a beautiful and lasting reminder that everyone has an important part to play.

A huge thank you to Michelle for sharing her expertise, nurturing our students’ creativity and helping them create such a meaningful legacy.

Crew Brunel: Thoughtful Thursday

Shannon Mitchell

This week’s Thoughtful Thursday gave Crew Brunel the opportunity to pause, reflect and think carefully about how we have started our Year 10 journey.

As we begin preparing for our GCSEs, developing good habits, taking ownership of our learning and understanding our strengths and areas for improvement are becoming increasingly important. Our session focused on exactly that – taking responsibility for where we are now and thinking about where we want to go next.

We began with our first round of HoWL reflections. Students self-assessed their progress across each of our three HoWLs: Work Hard, Get Smart and Be Kind. They used the HoWL rubric to RAG-rate themselves and awarded themselves a grade for each area. Once completed, students calculated their overall HoWL average, giving them a clear picture of their current strengths and areas for development as they settle into Key Stage 4.

The important part came next – setting SMART targets. With GCSE preparation now underway, students identified specific areas they wanted to improve and thought about practical steps they could take to develop their learning habits and make progress.

We then switched things around and moved on to peer assessment. Students assessed each other’s HoWLs based on what they have seen from their peers in sessions so far. They followed the same process of RAG-rating, grading and calculating an average, before finishing by setting a target for someone in their class. This encouraged students to consider how their actions and attitudes are seen by others, while also thinking about how they can support their peers to improve.

To finish the session, we looked back at our praises and conducts from the week and completed our SOS analysis. We celebrated the successes shown on our Crew leaderboard, recognised individual achievements and reflected on some of the conducts that had been recorded. Students were encouraged to think about what had gone well, what we wondered about and what we could do differently moving forward.

Finally, we selected two students to set pledges for next term, giving them a clear personal focus to work on and develop as we continue through Year 10.

Roan – ” I pledge to complete all of my extended study tasks to the best of my ability and make sure they are submitted on time to help improve my Get Smart HoWL from a 2.5 to a 3. “

Brooke – ” I pledge to arrive on time every day this term, helping me improve my Work Hard HoWL from a 3 to a 3.5. “

A really thoughtful and purposeful session from Crew Brunel. As we take our first steps into KS4 and GCSE preparation, it was great to see students reflecting honestly, taking ownership of their progress and thinking about the small changes they can make now to help them succeed in the future.

Beautiful Work & Big Questions: Sally Jameson MP Visits XP/E School

Eleanor Wilkinson

On Thursday 17 September, XP School welcomed Sally Jameson MP for a visit focused on student leadership, beautiful work, character growth and the role of politics in shaping our local area and wider country.

Sally Jameson is the MP for Doncaster Central, a position she has held since July 2024. Her visit gave students the opportunity to find out more about her work in Parliament, her responsibilities in Doncaster and the decisions politicians are involved in making.

The morning began with an ambassador tour led by Saanvi and Veya. They not only showed Sally around XP School but also confidently narrated some of the beautiful work displayed throughout the building, explaining the learning and purpose behind it.

This was followed by a smaller session led by Dexter and Pixie, who spoke to Sally about their own beautiful work and the purpose of student portfolios at XP. Both students articulated how they have grown since Year 7, not only academically, but through their Habits of Work and Learning (HoWLs) and character traits. They reflected on how their work demonstrates progress over time and how their portfolios allow them to tell the story of their own learning and character development.

The visit culminated in an expert talk and Q&A session with both Year 9 groups.

Students were keen to make the most of having an MP in the room and asked Sally a wide range of challenging questions. Topics included social housing, HS2, the Assisted Dying Bill, immigration, proposals around restricting social media use for under-16s, illegal electric bikes, differences between areas of England, building homes on floodplains, taxation and public spending, bus fares, the NHS budget and Sally’s own career and experiences.

Students were also interested in how politicians deal with disagreement and pressure. One thing that particularly stood out to us was how carefully politicians have to consider what they say and do, particularly when comments can quickly be shared through the media and online.

One student reflection:

“Something that made me think differently was that politicians have a lot of pressure and weight on their decisions. When people comment on those decisions, they don’t always see how much work goes on behind the scenes.”

Another important message from the session was that careers do not always follow the path we expect. We learned that Sally had not always imagined herself holding the position she has today, which reminded us of the importance of continuing to work hard and taking opportunities when they arise.

A particularly memorable part of the session was being able to ask questions about issues that affect young people directly. The discussion helped us think more carefully about how national and local decisions are made and encouraged us to develop a greater understanding of viewpoints that may be different from our own.

Sally’s visit also connected strongly with our XP character traits. Throughout the session, students demonstrated courage by asking challenging questions, integrity by listening respectfully to the responses and respect by allowing different perspectives to be heard.

It also demonstrated the importance of Crew. As a year group, we listened, questioned, discussed and learned together.

Overall, Sally Jameson’s visit gave us a valuable opportunity to speak directly with someone involved in making decisions at both a local and national level. It encouraged us to think more deeply about politics, public services and the issues affecting our community.

We would like to thank Sally Jameson for taking time from her schedule to visit XP School, speak with our students and answer our questions.

C30 Art

Daniel Currie

As the phase lead of C30, I get the opportunity to observe lessons, see character growth and students creating beautiful work. I had the pleasure of visiting art lessons over the last week and saw some outstanding work. It is amazing to see so many students engaging within their learning and creating such inspiring pieces of Art.

I am positive that with this continued work ethic, attitude and passion towards the subject we will see some exceptional academic progress.
